Base fee:
  • This ticket gets you into the NYESTA Banquet only on Wednesday evening at the Hilton Garden Inn in Nanuet. The semi-formal dinner will be held in the Hudson room. This payment does not include a conference T-Shirt. They may be purchased separately.

Tuesday August 5th

1:00-3:00: Check-in/registration – @ Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory - Columbia University, Geosciences building lobby (building 2)


Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

3:00-4:00: Tour of the LDEO campus facilities including Core Lab, Tree Ring Lab,   and Geochemistry Lab led by Dr. Michael Passow

4:00-5:00: Talk by Dr. Juan Martinez, Senior Research Staff Assistant at the Center for Integrated Earth System Information (CIESIN) of the Columbia Climate School.  

6:00 Dinner on your own

8:00 pm: Stargazing with telescopes and binoculars (bring your own too).  Anthony Wayne recreation area.


Wednesday August 7th

Breakfast on your own

8:00 AM: Meet in Hilton Garden Inn parking lot to organize a carpool.

8:00 AM -5:00 PM:

  • All day field trip led by Dr. Alec Gates of Rutgers University to the Geology of the Western Hudson Highlands, NY. (This preview is from an older trip, and at a professional level, but the content and sites should be similar).
  • Box lunches will be provided. A specific field guide to follow. The trip will cover the Earth Science topics of Earth's History, Plate Tectonics, Rocks and Minerals, and Glacially Modified Landforms. 
  • Please wear hiking shoes and be prepared for weather changes. Most observation spots will be short hikes from the cars, while the end of the day hike to higher a viewing spot will be moderately strenuous. 

5:00 PM: Return to hotel

6:00-9:00 PM: Annual Awards Dinner and Banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn, Hudson Room.  Access to the bar is permitted. Drinks on your own.

  • Guest speaker will be structural geologist Dr. Folarin Kolawole from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University


Thursday August 8th 

Breakfast on your own

8:00 AM: Meet in the hotel parking lot. You may drive your own car to the mine if you would like to leave directly from there.

9:30 - ?: All day field trip to Sterling Hill Mining Museum – Fluorescent Minerals

Mine Info

  • We will have a personalized tour of the museum, mine, and time for collecting at the fluorescent mineral mine run dump. Box lunches will be provided.

  • Note: The mine will be chilly. Please bring a light jacket.

  • The collecting area requires proper attire (closed toed shoes, etc). 

  • Goggles might be helpful but not required. We will provide goggles if needed. Bring your own collecting bag or bucket, but please no hammers. No one under 18 is permitted in the collecting area. A UV light could be useful, but not required.

  • $160.00 for non members (includes membership for 1 year)
